Can a director as distinctive as Chloé Zhao (The Rider;
Nomadland) manage to translate their vision to the micro-managed world of the Marvel
Cinematic Universe or will they be reduced to the directing equivalent of a
traffic cop?
After establishing herself as one of the most exciting filmmakers of her
generation, it's disappointing that Zhao has been sucked into the cookie
cutter world of Hollywood franchise cinema, but maybe, just maybe she can
bring something worthwhile to Eternals.
The film deals with the Eternals, a group of immortals who have vowed to
protect Earth from their sworn enemies The Deviants. Ugh. Even typing this
is disheartening, but knock yourself out and watch the first trailer
below.
Eternals' all-star ensemble cast features Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren
Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Kit
Harrington
and Barry Keoghan.
Eternals is in UK/ROI cinemas from November 5th.
The official synopsis reads:
After an unexpected tragedy following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the Eternals—an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7,000 years—reunite to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.
