New Release Review - The Debt
Directed by: John Madden
Starring: Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson, Marton Csokas, Ciaran Hinds
Hot on the heels of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" comes another non-thrilling thriller with a stellar cast. The plot concerns a trio of Mossad agents hunting down a Nazi war criminal in sixties East Germany. Had it been directed by a director who understands suspense it could have been quite gripping. Madden however is a journeyman whose roots in British TV drama are all too evident. One set-piece involves a race against time where our protagonists need to escape before an ambulance arrives. Madden blows this scene with a complete lack of geography, we keep getting shots of the approaching ambulance but he creates no sense of how close it is to our protagonists so the scene becomes devoid of urgency. Imagine what someone like De Palma would do with this scenario.
Madden is blessed that he assembled such a good cast, Chastain and Mirren are particularly impressive playing the same character thirty years apart. Worthington is bland as always but it suits his character here. Csokas is an actor who rarely gets a meaty part like this and performs admirably.
Overall it's not a bad movie just one that misses too many opportunities.
