10. I Was a Teenage Werewolf
Michael Landon is a far cry from "Little House On The Prairie" in this fun
puberty metaphor. This year also saw "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein" but this
is the better of the two.
9. The Abominable Snowman
One of Hammer's early films and one of their best. Cushing is superb as the
scientist obsessed with tracking down the fabled yeti.
8. Gunfight at the OK Corral
Several westerns have covered the events leading up to the famed shootout but
John Sturges version is the best. Watch out for a young Dennis Hopper as Billy
Clanton.
7. The Incredible Shrinking Man
There was a lot of quality science fiction around in the fifties and this
adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel is a must see. The effects still hold
up today.
6. Bridge on the River Kwai
As epic as you'd expect from David Lean with great performances from Alec
Guinness and William Holden. The theme tune will be stuck in your head for
days however.
5. Paths of Glory
Another war movie from a renowned film-maker. Kubrick does for trenches what
he would later do for hotel corridors in "The Shining".
4. Twelve Angry Men
The fifties was a great time to be an actor with meaty scripts like this.
Sidney Lumet showed he was an exciting new talent and would go on to direct a
slew of great movies in the coming decades.
3. The Sweet Smell of Success
Speaking of great scripts! Burt Lancaster was never better than as JJ
Hunsecker, the broadway columnist who'll do anything for a story.
2. The Curse of Frankenstein
The second Hammer film on this list and another outstanding Cushing
performance. If you only ever watch one Hammer movie, make it this one.
1. Night of the Demon (aka Curse of the Demon)
He may be known more for "Cat People" but this is Jacques Tourneour's
masterpiece. Essential viewing for fans of atmospheric horror, the plot was
ripped off by Sam Raimi for "Drag Me To Hell".
