Nymphomaniac
Any new Lars Von Trier movie is an event in its own unique way and Nymphomaniac promises to be his most outrageous project yet. Split into two separately released parts and reputedly due to be also released in a alternate version featuring hardcore sex scenes, the film has assembled Von Trier's most star studded cast yet. Looks certain to be 2014's most discussed movie.
Under the Skin
British director Jonathan Glazer has only made two previous films (Birth, Sexy Beast) but he's got a flawless record in terms of quality so far. For his third he reputedly takes the atmosphere of Birth and ramps up the surrealism with this tale of an alien, in Scarlett Johansson's body, who lures young Scottish men to their deaths.
Muppets Most Wanted
Any year in cinema is automatically improved by the presence of a muppet movie. This time the gang hit Europe to stop an international criminal. If it's as good as the 2011 reboot we're in for another treat.
Godzilla
On the surface Godzilla may seem like another cynical Hollywood reboot but with the director of the underseen Monsters, my top movie of 2010, on board, this could be something really special. Or it could be just as bad as the Roland Emmerich version. Fingers crossed then.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a rare example of a franchise rebooted in an original and successful manner. It turned out to be a much bigger hit than anyone predicted and thus we get a sequel. Sadly, Rupert Wyatt declined to return as director but thankfully the husband and wife writing team of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are back on board. Prepare to go ape!
