Thanks largely to TV, the close-up has now become the standard means of filming a character. But those filmmakers of a more cinematic bent recognise that the close-up can serve a distinct purpose, and thus use it sparingly and to great effect.
One such filmmaker was Stanley Kubrick. A new video essay by The Discarded Image looks at Kubrick's use of close-ups to make points about the psychology of his characters.
