A new video examines the stressful structure of the Safdie brothers' acclaimed thriller.
Most of us go through life doing our best to avoid stressful situations, but some people seem to feed on chaos. One such person is Howard Ratner, the New York jeweller played by Adam Sandler in the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems. In the film, Ratner continually digs a hole for himself, evading his debtors while attempting to retrieve the rare Ethiopian black opal diamond that he believes will change his fortune. What's a tense and stressful experience for the audience oddly seems merely water off a duck's back for Ratner.
The below video essay by The Royal Ocean Film Society takes a look at how the Safdies' film manages to maintain such a chaotic tone while being a tightly structured piece of storytelling.
Uncut Gems is on Netflix now.
