Pablo Larraín's music drama is coming to MUBI UK in Monday.
Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (The Club; Neruda; Jackie) was churning out movies at an astonishing rate a few years ago, but he's made us wait four years for his latest, the music drama Ema.
Ema stars Mariana Di Girolamo as the eponymous Ema, a reggaeton dancer who embarks on a quest to win back the child she previously gave up to the state. Larraín regular Gael García Bernal also stars, along with Paola Giannini and Santiago Cabrera.
The COVID-19 crisis has scuppered Ema's chances of a UK cinema release, so instead it will now make its debut on MUBI UK on May 2nd.
Check out MUBI's new trailer below.
The official synopsis reads:
Ema (Di Girolamo) is a young dancer in a reggaeton troupe: effortlessly magnetic and dangerously impulsive. Her toxic marriage to older choreographer Gastón (Gael García Bernal) is beyond repair, following a rash decision to hand their adopted child Polo back into the hands of the state. Racked with regret, she sets out on a mission to get her son back, not caring who she’ll need to fight, seduce or destroy to make it happen.
