The arthouse steaming service has announced its July roster.
MUBI UK's July line-up offers subscribers the latest films from Hirokazu Kore-eda, Christian Petzold and Wang Xiaoshuai, along with retrospectives of Pedro Almodóvar and Rita Azevedo Gomes, and a double bill from Werner Herzog.
Magnificent Obsessions: The Films of Pedro Almodóvar
After last year’s deep dive into Almodóvar’s early filmography, MUBI is now looking at the Spanish legend’s recent work, starting with his latest semi-autobiographical film Pain and Glory (2019). Showing exclusively on MUBI from June 19th, Antonio Banderas gives the performance of a lifetime as an ageing film director investigating the relationship between his life and his work. In July, they’ll be showing an earlier collaboration between Banderas and Almodóvar, in the romantic comedy Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989). Another Spanish star, Javier Bardem, stars in the 1997 drama Live Flesh. The retrospective will continue in the next few months with six more titles.
MUBI Spotlight
MUBI presents three exclusive titles coming straight from cinemas: The Truth (2019), Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film, which premiered in Venice last year and features a stellar cast that includes Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke; Christian Petzold’s Transit (2018), a stunning adaptation of a 1940s drama set in modern times, with brilliantly disturbing results; and So Long, My Son (Wang Xiaoshuai, 2019), a multi-decade saga of family and loss which was awarded prizes for Best Actor and Best Actress at the 2019 Berlinale.
Werner Herzog Double Bill
MUBI celebrates one of cinema’s greatest and most prolific living masters, Werner Herzog, by showcasing a special double bill. In Wheel of Time (2003), Herzog captures a Tibetan Buddhist initiation rite and the creation of a mandala, reflecting on the significance of religion and meditation. In The Wild Blue Yonder (2005), he creates a unique, spellbinding sci-fi film using found footage and fictional interviews with an alien whose species is trying to colonise Earth.
Rita Azevedo Gomes Focus
MUBI highlights the singular work of Rita Azevedo Gomes, one of Portugal’s finest filmmakers, whose long career spans from cinema, to theatre, to fine art. All of these influences shine through in The Portuguese Woman (2018), a rich portrait of a newlywed woman left alone in a 17th century castle, that became a festival hit in 2018. The season will also include the multi-layered, epistolary Correspondences and the solemn, mysterious period adaptation A Woman's Revenge.
Rediscovered: The Invincibles
After premiering at last year’s Berlinale, MUBI presents the exclusive online premiere of Dominik Graf’s director’s cut of his epic 1994 crime drama The Invincibles. A commercial flop when it was first released, it is now regarded as the most ambitious effort by the German helmer.
Brief Encounters: Villa Empain
In this 16 mm doc, from last year’s IFFR, Katharina Kastner explores the multiple lives of the wonderful Villa Empain in Brussels: first a private residence, then a Soviet embassy, and now an art gallery, Villa Empain captures history through the marks it left on the building.
Viewfinder: The Good Girls
A scathing, darkly funny satire of Mexican high society, Alejandra Márquez Abella's The Good Girls looks at the effects of the 1980s economic crisis as experienced by bourgeois women whose entire world collapses along with the market.
Debuts: Again Once Again
Romina Paula, a multi talented novelist, playwright and actress (known for her collaborations with Matias Piñeiro), turns to directing in this beautifully delicate, autobiographical look at motherhood in which she stars as herself, blending documentary and fiction.
