Ask a kid what they want to be when they grow up and chances are they'll
simply reply "Famous." The internet has sold the idea that fame and
celebrity are just a few well lit Instagram snaps or a couple of
attention-grabbing YouTube videos away.
In Mainstream, Gia Coppola's first film since her 2013 debut
Palo Alto, Maya Hawke plays one such young person desperate for instant
stardom. Hooking up with a charismatic YouTube celeb (Andrew Garfield), she achieves her goal, but seemingly at a cost.
It might seem a little odd that the daughters of Francis Ford Coppola and
Ethan Hawke have made a movie critiquing young people's desire for instant
fame, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt for now.
Mainstream is in US cinemas and on VOD from May 7th. A UK/ROI
release has yet to be announced.

The official synopsis reads:
MAINSTREAM follows a young woman (Maya Hawke) who thinks she’s found a path to internet stardom when she starts making YouTube videos with a charismatic stranger (Andrew Garfield) – until the dark side of viral celebrity threatens to ruin them both.
