With striking performances in the likes of An Impossible Love, Sybil and
Night Shift, Belgian actress Virginie Efira has been threatening breakout
stardom for a while now, but she's about to announce herself to a wider
audience by starring in Benedetta, the latest from resurgent Dutch provoc-auteur
Paul Verhoeven.
Set in 15th century Tuscany, Benedetta sees Efira play
Benedetta Carlini, a real life nun who became notorious for her mystical
abilities and for having a lesbian affair which led to her imprisonment.
Yep, it's a Verhoeven movie alright.
The cast also includes Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia and
Lambert Wilson.
Benedetta premieres at this summer's Cannes Film Festival and
is in French cinemas this July. A UK/ROI release has yet to be
announced.
Check out the trailer below.
The official synopsis reads:
In the late 15th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.
