The New French Extremity Movement of the 2000s featured a wave of horror
movies and thrillers boasting extreme violence and uncomfortable themes.
Belgian cinema got in on the act too with director Fabrice Du Welz's Calvaire one of the most acclaimed
films to come out of the movement.
The film stars Laurent Lucas as a singer whose car breaks down in
rural Belgium. When he's offered shelter by a disturbed innkeeper, it
unleashes a wave of violence.
Calvaire is on UK VOD from September 19th.

The official synopsis reads:
Marc Stevens is a travelling singer in rural Belgium. At the nursing home where he is performing, the concert has ended, and Marc takes to the road. Shortly afterwards his car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. He is taken in by Bartel, an innkeeper who became psychologically fragile after his wife Gloria left him.
