Known as "The biggest little city in the world," Reno, Nevada has always
played second fiddle to Las Vegas as a gambling mecca. But while many movies
have been set in Vegas, quite a few have opted for Reno as a setting too.
The city may not attract as much attention as Vegas, and is probably less
popular now with the rise of online casinos like 22Bet NG, but here are
three movies that have made great use of the world's biggest little
city.
5 Against the House
This 1955 heist thriller was one of the first of its type to highlight
the city of Reno. The titular "5" are a group of clever college students
who take a trip to reno and become obsessed with the idea that they can
outsmart the security at a major casino and pull off a daring heist. The
heist itself is a classic set-piece that sees the bandits disguised amid a
costume party, an original idea that would become a well-worn trope in
later thrillers.
California Split
Robert Altman's classic black comedy stars Elliott Gould and George Segal
as Charlie and Bill, two strangers who form a friendship based around
their love of gambling. Impressed by Bill's luck, Charlie convinces him to
take part in a high stakes poker game in Reno. Before they get to the city
however they must deal with the bookie to whom Bill owes a considerable
debt.
Kill Me Again
Real life couple Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley starred in this twisty
1989 thriller. Whalley plays Fay, a femme fatale who flees her violent
boyfriend (Michael Madsen) with the suitcase full of money they stole from
the mob. Fay heads to Reno where she enlists private eye Jack (Kilmer) to
fake her death. As Jack is seduced by the sexy Fay, he finds he's just the
latest man she's made a fool of and a violent game of cat and mouse
ensues.
